I have a special interest in the power of the open source movement to broaden access to computing technologies and close the ‘digital divide’ that blocks access through the tremendous cost of proprietary software. With Microsoft Windows and Office as de facto standards, setting up and running a personal computer requires hundreds of dollars beyond the cost of hardware. Open source development, especially in OS and productivity applications, can bring computing into the range of low income users and the social services providers that they use.
