What We Talk About When We Talk About Project Management

We ask for a lot of things under the heading of 'project management'. This leads to pain and suffering when we are not clear for what we are asking for, or we're not set up to support what we're asking for. This is particularly special in open source companies and projects.


Project management tends to be a ‘catch-all’ bucket when we’re trying to hire for a role in open source companies. It also tends to get tossed into a bucket of operations and finances and billing as well. How do you know that you’re going to get the right person for the job? On the reverse side, are you writing the right job description for the person you want?

I’ll go through

  • what the ‘definition of project management’ is
  • how transitions to in the real world
  • some job descriptions that clearly outline what they’re looking for
  • some job descriptions that really don’t
  • making your expectations match up with what’s available
  • ways to grow your project managers into the role that’s there
