Federating With The Trouble - Running Decentralized Communities

Accepted Session
Short Form
Scheduled: Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 3:45 – 4:30pm in B302/303

As moderators and admins of a mastodon/gnu social instance called Toot.Cat we were quickly propelled into navigating the strange new world of decentralized community stewardship.

In late March of 2017 Mastodon.social sprung up as an open source replacement for Twitter. A project that seeks to build a twitter like social experience without a lot of the negatives. We decided to start our own instance called toot.cat. We will speak about what we have learned from our experience building a community from the ground up with the intention to be a social media outfit, but to be explicitly radically inclusive.

We will discuss what we have learned, what challenges we faced, and what the future has in store for toot.cat.
