Why you can't afford to miss out on junior developers

Accepted Session
Short Form
Scheduled: Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 3:45 – 4:30pm in B204

What if your next hire could make your team faster, help create a more inclusive and diverse environment, be easy to find, and be super excited to work with you?

These people are not unicorns, they're junior developers. Most teams just don't know how to bring them on and get these benefits. Whether you're in a startup, consultancy, or a BigCo, with a few tips and processes, any team can learn how to grow new developers.

Everyone wants someone else to turn all the juniors into seniors. When you let that happen, you’re missing out on the great benefits you gain by continually hiring new developers and building a sustainable team.

If you work at optimizing just a few things for new developers they can be immediately productive. A few examples are:

  • Have a great on-boarding process. (Or have one at all)
  • Keep your development environment setup simple and up to date.
  • Have clearer product requirements and communication.
  • Give them room to experiment.
  • Have a team-mentorship attitude.

And it turns out, optimizing for new developers like this makes your whole team better!
