You have a really cool open source project and everyone should see it, try it, and use it. But … they don’t seem to know about it. How can you make sure your project gets the press coverage it deserves?

Reporters are people too- don't insult them, praise them if you can.
Nothing is off the record [I personally disagree].
If you want to decide the news, you do the work (meaning write the story you want them to hear and send it to them)[again, I disagree. It is important to have all the information available in a press release or tip, and maybe you could suggest an angle, but most reporters I know resent this from a tipster]
Bloggers are not professional reporters [I disagree, some of us are].
embargoes- what they are and how to handle them.
press releases- most reporters are on a deadline, be timely with your responses. Use services like PRnewswire.
